Seroprevalence of Toscana Virus in Blood Donors, France, 2007

چکیده
Nested reverse transcription–PCR using degenerate primers was applied to amplify a 222-bp fragment of the large RNA segment of phleboviruses (9). The retrieved sequence was identical to sequences detected in sandfl ies collected in 2005 in the Adriatic coastal region of Albania; that strain was provisionally named Adria virus (10). Adria virus is distinct from other recognized members of the genus Phlebovirus and clusters with phleboviruses of the Salehabad serocomplex, such as Salehabad virus and Arbia virus, differing by 21.6% and 29.6% with Salehabad virus and Arbia virus at the nucleotide level and by 3% and 17.7% at the amino acid level, respectively (Table). Detection of the Adria virus sequence in the patient’s blood suggests that this virus is pathogenic to humans. As expected, serologic testing of the sample taken at the time of admission produced negative results for phleboviruses; a convalescentphase blood sample was not available. Although the course of the disease in the child was mild, further studies will show the role of this strain in public health. Because the duration of viremia in persons with phlebovirus infections is short, use of molecular methods for the laboratory diagnosis of phleboviral infections is limited; and even when a phleboviral infection is confi rmed by serologic testing, the exact strain is diffi cult to determine. Physicians in Greece, as in other Mediterranean countries, should be aware of the circulation of phleboviruses and potential risk for phlebovirusassociated infections during the summer. Such infections, especially with neurologic signs, should be included in the differential diagnosis of summer febrile syndromes.

Evaluation of the Seroprevalence of Transfusion Transmissible Infections among Blood Donors in a Tertiary Care Hospital of North India
Background: Unsafe transfusion practices put patients at high risk of transfusion transmissible infections. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of transfusion transmissible infections (including Human Immunodeficiency Virus [HIV] 1 and 2, Hepatitis B Virus [HBV], Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and syphilis) during a period of 18 months among blood donors in the Blood Bank of Lady Hardinge Medical Coll...
متن کاملSeroprevalence of Cytomegalovirus Infection in Blood Donors in Khorramabad
Background and Aims: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) has worldwide distribution, and its prevalence rate depends on factors such as economic and geographical conditions. An important way of the virus transmission is via blood. Due to high prevalence of anti-CMV antibodies in blood donors and lack of data concerning its seroprevalence in the region, this study was carried out to determine the prevalence r...
متن کاملSeroprevalence of Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B Viruses Among Blood Donors in North of Iran
Background and Objective: Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) are both transmitted by the fecal-oral route and are known as leading causes of acute viral hepatitis in the world, especially in developing countries. There is a lack of updated data on HAV and HEV seroprevalence in the north of Iran. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of HAV and HEV among blood donors ...
متن کاملCocirculation of 2 Genotypes of Toscana Virus, Southeastern France
Toscana virus (TOSV), an arthropodborne phlebovirus transmitted by sandflies, can cause febrile illness and meningitis. The vector of TOSV in France was unknown. We detected TOSV RNA in 2 (female Phlebotomus perniciosus) of 61 pools of sandflies captured in southeastern France. Two genotypes of TOSV were identified.
متن کاملHepatitis C virus infection and genotypes in blood donors
Abstract: Genotyping of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) is important for designing therapeutic strategies and regional specific diagnostic assays. The aim of this study was to identify the HCV genotypes in HCV infected blood donors. This is the first report on HCV genotypes in blood donors in Iran. In this cross-sectional study, 103 blood donors with hepatitis C were investigated for HCV genotype...
